Urban Baldwin diary

Scope and Contents This collection includes the original handwritten journal as well as a typed transcript version of Urban Baldwin’s experiences fighting for the Union Army during the Civil War. The diary spans the spring and part of the summer of 1865. Baldwin records much about army camp life and details of skirmishes and small battles.

Records in Rising Sun, Indiana and the United States ranging from 1862 to 1865 and 1904 regarding his military service with the 72nd Indiana Regiment during the U.S. Civil War and life as a farmer in Rising Sun. There are also photocopies of the more fragile diaries, as well as miscellaneous papers (1855-1864) and a manuscript by Records based on his Civil War diaries.

On January 16, 1861, Floyd Thurman wrote to his brother Marion about visiting the city of Evansville. The January 29, 1861 letter to "Esteemed Friend" (Marion Thurman, Grandview, Spencer County, Indiana) has a photo of Major-General Siegel on the envelope. This letter, written by J. M. William R. Ellis letter

Scope and Contents This collection includes a photocopy of a December 19, 1863 letter written by William R. Ellis from Bridgeport, Alabama while serving with the 48th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. The letter is addressed to "Dear Sister Em" and Ellis mentions that he's marched over 300 miles, fought in a battle, and was uncertain where they'd go next. He also notes that the "soldier boys" had received new clothes and comments on the cold weather.

Although someone has numbered the photocopies, they do not go in order of the dates, because page 21 has an entry for November 23, 1864, whereas page 3 has the date January 26, 1865.
