Scope and Contents

This collection includes diaries from William H. Records in Rising Sun, Indiana and the United States ranging from 1862 to 1865 and 1904 regarding his military service with the 72nd Indiana Regiment during the U.S. Civil War and life as a farmer in Rising Sun. There are also photocopies of the more fragile diaries, as well as miscellaneous papers (1855-1864) and a manuscript by Records based on his Civil War diaries.

Biographical Note

William Henry Records was born on December 19, 1836 to Samuel and Lucinda M. (Cadwell) Records in Neville, Ohio. In 1860, he was working as a farmer in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. On August 4, 1862, Records was enrolled in Company I, 72nd Indiana Regiment of the Union Army. He rose to the rank of corporal before mustering out on June 26, 1865. Records married Isabelle Pate (1841) on December 29, 1865 in Rising Sun, Indiana and they had 4 children: Fannie Aurena (1868-1953), Alice, Thomas Watterson (1875-1956), and Lula Lucinda (1880-1963). He continued to work as a farmer, then in Ohio County. Records died on May 9, 1906 and was buried in Cedar Hedge Cemetery in Rising Sun.
