Scope and Contents

This collection includes photocopied letters of the William Thurman family, including letters written during the Civil War. On January 16, 1861, Floyd Thurman wrote to his brother Marion about visiting the city of Evansville. The January 29, 1861 letter to "Esteemed Friend" (Marion Thurman, Grandview, Spencer County, Indiana) has a photo of Major-General Siegel on the envelope. This letter, written by J. M. Fleming, tells about the men having measles. Mr. Fleming wrote: "it makes recruiting our company only lacks one man and our officers have got their sheep skin so it is all right if we have to go to another reg." Joseph E. and Esther Brown wrote to "Dear Brother" Wayne Thurman on January 28, 1862. Other writers were Richard Thurman, William R. Thurman, Floyd Thurman, James W. Waitman, and Sam Kercheval.

Biographical Note

William Thurman was born in Virginia about 1806. In 1850, he was living with his wife Ann, age 36, and five children: Isham (14), Floyd (12), Wayne (10), Marian (7), and Esther (5). Ten years later, the federal census recorded him with wife Rebecca, age 40, born in Ohio, and four children: Floyd (23), Wayne (21), Marion (18), and Esther (15). Floyd was born March 10, 1837; served in Company F, 1st Cavalry Regiment; died June 18, 1923; and is buried in Grandview Cemetery, Richland, Indiana. Wayne was a Sergeant in Company C, 42nd Indiana Regiment; and died July 11, 1862, in Huntsville, Alabama.
