Biographical Note

Urban Baldwin was born circa 1830; the historical record conflicts about his place of birth, but it was either Indiana or North Carolina. Baldwin fought for the Union Army in the Civil War, serving in the 69th Indiana Regiment, Company E. He enlisted in 1862 as a private and was discharged in 1865 at the same rank. Baldwin lived and worked as a farmer with his wife and children in Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana. His wife filed to receive his soldier’s pension in the state of Maryland in 1889, so it is likely that he died sometime in the late 1880s.
