Scope and Contents

This collection contains a portfolio created by Ralph Roessler entitled, "A Documentary and Autobiographic Record of a Kiwanis Dream and a Seventy Million Dollar Reality, 1939-1968." The portfolio was created in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Marion, Indiana Kiwanis Club and includes Roessler's written account describing the events that helped establish the Indiana Flood Control & Water Resources Commission and the eventual construction of the Mississinewa Reservoir. Also included are pictures regarding the Huntington, Mississinewa, and Salamonie Reservoirs; pictures of politicians, Army Corps of Engineer officers, and commission members involved in the construction projects; and photos of the Marion floods of 1913 & 1958.

Biographical Note

Ralph Roessler was born May 23, 1887 in Canton, Ohio to Henry and Caroline Roessler. He married Zenna Abbott on September 10, 1913 and they had two sons, Ralph Jr. and William. Roessler was past owner of the Roessler-Kirk Jewelry Store in Marion, Indiana and a charter member of the Marion Kiwanis Club. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Indiana Flood Control and Water Resources Commission in 1945 and is credited with being the "father of the Mississinewa Reservoir." Roessler was 86 years old when he died on February 2, 1974.
