Scope and Contents
This collection includes two typewritten copies of "History of the Decatur Township School System," a paper read by Edwin S. Mills, chairman of the Decatur Township Advisory Board, on the occasion of the laying of the cornerstone of Decatur Central School on November 25, 1931. A copy of the history was placed in the cornerstone along with other mementos as part of the ceremony.

Biographical Note
Edwin S. Mills was born March 1, 1863 in Decatur Township, Marion County, Indiana to Amos and Mary Elizabeth (Cook) Mills. He was educated in Decatur township schools and graduated from Earlham college in 1887. He married Margaret Carter in 1892 and they had five children. Throughout his life he took an interest in the township schools and served many terms as a member of the township's advisory board. He was a successful farmer and became a breeder of pedigreed Jersey cattle in 1906. In 1926, he established the retail dairy business, Maplehurst Farms, with his sons. He also served as director of the Standard Life Insurance Company of Indiana and served for many years as president of the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Association and of the West Newton Telephone Company. A lifelong resident of Marion County, he died at his home near West Newton on August 4, 1935.
