Lawrence in Indiana and Nebraska ranging from 1922 to 1989, regarding education and teaching, family life, poetry, publishing, and travel in Europe.

Biographical Note

Marjorie E. Kahl was born October 28, 1904, in Bryant, Indiana in a Lutheran parsonage to Elmer and Mary McClure Kahl. She had two older brothers, Lyman E. and Harold M. and a younger brother, Paul S. Kahl grew up in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nebraska and Wyoming. She began writing poetry in 1922. Returning to Indiana in 1930, she attended Midland College and received an A.B. from Carthage College in 1941. Kahl studied elementary education at the University of Chicago and became a kindergarten and primary school teacher, teaching at schools in Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana, retiring in 1973 and operating the Lawrence Day School in Mulberry, Indiana.

Kahl married Rev. Dr. Harvey S. Lawrence in Marion County, Indiana on November 26, 1941; he died in 1949. Marjorie Lawrence also wrote plays, Bible school materials, short stories and school textbooks. She died on October 13, 1994 and was buried in Providence Cemetery, Mulberry, Indiana. Her tombstone reads: "I tried" and "Thou God seest me."
