This collection includes handwritten and typed poems and poetry volumes, correspondence from students, Christmas cards with poems and woodcut illustrations, scrapbooks, newsletters, writings, scrapbooks, travel journals, and a wax grooved disc from Marjorie Kahl Lawrence in Mulberry, Lawrence, and other places in Indiana and Nebraska, ranging from 1922 to 1989, regarding her literary work and career, education and teaching, family life, and travel in Europe.

Biographical Note

Marjorie Edith Kahl was born October 28, 1904 to Elmer and Mary (McClure) Kahl in a Lutheran parsonage in Bryant, Indiana. She had three brothers, Lyman E., Harold M., and Paul S. Her family moved frequently, living in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Kahl began writing poetry in 1922. Returning to Indiana in 1930, she attended Midland College and received an A.B. from Carthage College in 1941. Kahl married Rev. Dr. Harvey S. Lawrence in Marion County, Indiana on November 26, 1941. Kahl studied elementary education at the University of Chicago and became a kindergarten and primary school teacher. Her husband died on October 20, 1949 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She continued teaching, working at schools in Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana, retiring in 1973 and operating the Lawrence Day School in Mulberry, Indiana. In addition to poetry, Marjorie Kahl Lawrence also wrote plays, Bible school materials, short stories, and school textbooks. She died on October 13, 1994 and is buried in Providence Cemetery in Mulberry, Indiana.
