Historical Note
Indiana State University is a public university in Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1870, the school opened its doors to its first students as the Indiana State Normal School. In June 1890, Arthur Cunningham was appointed the first librarian at the school and he was instrumental in the construction of the school’s first library building that was dedicated in June 1920. In 1929, the school's name was changed to the Indiana State Teachers College and in 1961 “Teachers” was dropped from the name. The college became Indiana State University in 1965 and the library was named the Cunningham Memorial Library in honor of the former librarian. The library's collections doubled in size by the 1960s, and a new library was constructed and opened on January 11, 1973.
