Biographical note
Moody Chamberlain was an early settler of Terre Haute, Indiana. Born November 3, 1791, he was the son of James and Rebecca Chamberlain of Hillborough County, New Hampshire. Shortly after their marriage, they set out for the West and arrived at Terre Haute, Indiana in 1821. Moody quickly became a leader of the community and was appointed an associate judge of the Circuit Court for Vigo County in 1825. Aroung 1835, he began a partnership with Asa L. Chase in a sawmill located near Mill Run Creek and the business operated under the name of Chamberlain and Chase.
