John R. Wilson letter and pass
Collection — Folder: S3351
Identifier: S3351
Scope and Contents
This collection includes an 1862 letter written by John R. Wilson from Camp Dennison and sent to his wife in Muskingum County, Ohio. The heading of the letter gives the date as "Wednesday the 24/ 62." Since John enlisted with his regiment on August 26th, the letter was most likely written in September. In the letter he mentions helping organize a prayer meeting and spending time with the sick. The letter was with a victory envelope addressed to Wilson at Memphis, Tennessee and stamped with a March 3, 1863 postmark from Cairo, Illinois. The $20.00 of Confederate money mentioned in a note attached to the envelope is no longer part of the collection.
The collection also includes a May 17, 1864 pass issued by the U.S. War Department. The pass gave a Mr. George O. Brastow permission to travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to "see about the remains of relatives and to visit those who are wounded" and was signed by Inspector General James A. Hardie.
