Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a handwritten ledger book of labor for construction of the Fort Wayne and Southern Railroad in Blackford County, Indiana, in 1854, listing the names of workers along with the days and hours each worked. Additional notes are included for 1868. The time book was kept by David Miller Mercer, who was one of the investors in the railroad.

Administrative History

The Fort Wayne and Southern Railroad was incorporated in 1849 by the Indiana General Assemby and was succeeded by the Fort Wayne, Muncie and Cincinnatti Railway around 1868.

Biographical Note

David Miller Mercer was born July 25, 1815 to Edward R. and Elizabeth Mercer in Hamilton County, Ohio. He married Keziah Campbell, granddaughter of William Henley, on November 24, 1837. They had 5 children: Minerva, Emma, Anna B., and Fielding. Mercer was a merchant and invested in the Fort Wayne and Southern Railroad. He died in Hartford City, Indiana on September 3, 1893.
