Biographical Note

Walter Stansbury Lemmon was born on January 16, 1893 to Darius W. (1864-1932) and Ora Bell (McRae) Lemmon (1874-1945). The family were farmers in Harrison, County, Indiana. Lemmon graduated from Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, presumably with a teaching degree. During World War I, Lemmon enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 2, 1918 in Corydon, Indiana and led the drafted men from Corydon to Camp Grant, Illinois. He was a private in Company D, 5th Infantry Regiment during training at Camp Grant where he caught influenza. A few weeks after the end of quarantine, Lemmon joined Company E, 8th Battalion, Infantry Replacement Camp at Camp MacArthur in Waco, Texas. He was discharged January 10, 1919 at Camp Zachary Taylor in Kentucky. He returned to working on the family farm, but became a public school teacher by 1930. In 1945, he lived in Laconia, Harrison County, Indiana, but eventually returned to farming while living in Laconia, Harrison County. Lemmon died of a heart attack on April 29, 1958 in Corydon, Indiana and was buried in Rehoboth Cemetery in Laconia, Indiana. Sources: Ancestry.com. "Walter S.
