Biographical Note
Chauncey Rose was born on December 24, 1794 in Wethersfield, Connecticut to John and Mary (Warner) Rose, who were Scottish immigrants. He moved to Indiana around 1818 and first established a milling and merchandizing business in Roseville, known then as Dotyville, in what is now Parke County. In 1824, he opened a store in Terre Haute, where he became a leading merchant and one of the town’s most prominent citizens. Rose is credited with the founding of the old Terre Haute and Richmond Railroad Company and was a major contributor to Indiana’s railroad history. He constructed a fine hotel called the Prairie House, later called Terre Haute House.
Rose was a noted philanthropist, providing significant funding to Wabash College, Providence Hospital, and the Rose Orphans Home. He funded the library of the State Normal School of Terre Haute (now Indiana State University) and founded the Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) and endowed it with over a half million dollars. Rose died on August 13, 1877 and is buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana.
