Scope and Contents

This collection includes two photostat pages. The first item is a letter from Benjamin Bales of Moreland, Indiana on October 17, 1883, to his nephew Levi Bales, asking him not to join the Dunkards, do it. The second item is a collected page of Bales family history that was written by Tom Hamm.

Biographical Note

Benjamin Bales was born in east Tennessee on May 31, 1814, to Aaron and Mary (Bond) Bales. His family were Quakers and birthright members of the Society of Friends. Bales married Nancy Koons, who was born on December 13, 1814, in Richmond, Indiana, in 1838. Nancy died on July 16, 1875. The couple had 11 children, and all who made it to adulthood married outside the Society of Friends, causing great pain to their parents. Bales died on May 9, 1884, and was buried with the rest of his relatives in the Bales Cemetery in Blue River Township, Henry County, Indiana.
