Biographical Note
John Harris Baker was born in Parma Township, Monroe County, New York on February 28, 1832. He attended the Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio and later studied law in Adrian, Michigan. He was admitted to the bar in 1857 and began his law practice in Goshen, Indiana. He became a member of the Indiana Senate in 1862 but was unseated because he was also a notary public and the state constitution forbad holding two lucrative offices.
He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1875 and served until 1880 when he declined to be a candidate. He then returned to Goshen and resumed his law practice. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1888. He was appointed to the United States District Court for Indiana by President Harrison in 1892 and served until his retirement in 1904. He resided in Goshen until his death on October 21, 1915.
