Biographical / Historical
Asa C. Porter came to Indiana from Kentucky in 1816 when he was about 12 years old. He married Lucinda Glover and they had a number of children. The family moved to Jasper County, Indiana around 1848. In the first year of the Civil War, their sons Asa W. (1837-1862) and Jonah G. (1840-1861) mustered into Company G, 9th Indiana Regiment. Jonah was killed at Buffalo Mountain on December 12, 1861 and Asa died on May 9, 1862 at Rensselaer, Indiana from wounds received at the Battle of Shiloh. Their son Rice mustered into Company H, 151st Indiana Regiment on February 7, 1865 and died few months later at a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on June 24, 1865.
