Porter and Porter family members while the brothers served in the Civil War. The bulk of the letters were written from July 1861 to March 1862, but there are two letters from Rice written in 1865.

Milroy and addressed to the editors of the Cincinnati Daily Times regarding an October 8th article that mentioned that "The Seventh Indiana broke and ran, their officers endeavoring in vain to stop them" during the Battle of Greenbrier on October 3rd.
