Dr. Ambrose Gore Ruddell collection

Scope and Contents

This collection includes one folder with a few documents and three account books of costs for Dr. Ruddell's professional services. Folder 1 contains a hand-written legal document regarding the sale of property executed on August 21, 1865, between Ambrose G. Ruddell and Asher C. Brunson. There is also an undated, torn letter on Philadelphia University letterhead from L. Fairbanks to Dr. Ruddell which states: "I am informed [that] you are a practicing physician, but have not graduate[d]. Allow me to ask you whether you intend ever to attend lectures? Would it not be to your advantage to graduate? I can make very favorable arrangements with you, an[d] enclose our announcement for your perusal. Perhaps with your experience and qualifications, a part of the course may be dispensed with." A land contract signed by President Zachary Taylor is also in folder 1.

Biographical Note

Dr. Ambrose Gore Ruddell was born in Kentucky in 1808 and married Nancy T. Nesbit on February 20, 1834. In 1850 census, he was listed as 42, his wife Nancy was 41, and his son James H. was 9. In 1870, Ambrose, 62, and Nancy, 60, were living in Allisonville, Marion County, Indiana. Ambrose was a doctor. He died in 1875 and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery. His son Frank Ruddell, Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, donated the three account books showing his father's patients and the amounts he charged them.
