This collection includes documents regarding the affairs of Dr. John N. Denny and his wife, Martha McConnell Denny in Indiana, ranging from 1849 to 1939. The bulk of materials are related to Dr. Denny concerning his medical training and practice, as well as his license to teach in the Common Schools of LaGrange County, Indiana and matters relating to family burials.
Martha Denny's papers concern her work as a schoolteacher, including two licenses, and as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Other items regard the history of the McConnell family. Many of the McConnell family materials document the history of the town of Rochester in Noble County, Indiana.

Biographical Note
Dr. John Nisbet Denny was born in Elkhart County, Indiana, on September 16, 1834, to John Denny and Mary McConnell, one of four children. Three years after his birth, his parents moved to LaGrange County, Indiana, where his father served as an associate judge of the county. Denny began his study of medicine in Goshen, Indiana, where he worked for three years. He then took a course of lectures at Rush Medical College in Chicago. After completing his studies in Chicago, he returned to LaGrange County to continue to practicing medicine. Denny married Martha McConnell in 1883, and the couple had one daughter, Madelena. Denny died on March 28, 1908, in Ligonier, Indiana.
