Historical Note
In 1913, the Indiana General Assembly passed the "Compulsory Attendance of Children" act which required all children between the ages of seven and fourteen to attend school unless physically or mentally disqualified. It also required that children between the ages of fourteen and sixteen attend school if they were not actually and regularly employed during school hours. On or before the first day of each school year the executive officer of each school corporation was to furnish the attendance officer with the names of the children, subject to the provisions of the act, who were "enumerated in the regular enumeration lists." The names were to be alphabetically arranged and the school official was to supply the attendance officer with all information on the enumeration returns concerning the children listed.
