Scope and Contents
This collection includes a photocopy of a February 10, 1848 letter written by Major D. Northrup of Galway, Saratoga County, New York and sent to the county clerk of Steuben County, Indiana. Northrup was inquiring into land he had purchased in the county and whether the taxes had been paid. Northrup had been sending money to a Mr. Chauncy to pay the taxes, but he had not received any receipts or notifications that they were paid after 1844. Also included is a photocopy of the recipient's address written on the reverse side of the letter with Galway, N.Y. March 13 written above and to the left of the address.

Biographical Note
Major D. Northrup was born June 20, 1793 at Galway, Saratoga County, New York to Lewis and Robah (Smith) Northrup. He married Agnes Speir and they raised a large family. Northrup was a farmer and lived at Galway until around 1870 when he moved to Broadalbin, Fulton County, New York. He died at the age of 90 on July 11, 1883.
