Biographical Note

John Wallis Albert Gall was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on November 23, 1842. He was the oldest son of Dr. Alois D. Gall (1814-1867), a surgeon in the U.S. Civil War, and Caroline Gall (1818-1889). Gall and his family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana when he was five years old. In 1853, his father was appointed U.S. consul to Antwerp, where Gall finished his education. He returned to Indianapolis in 1859, entering the dry goods profession. Shortly thereafter, Gall moved to San Francisco, California, where he remained for four years. He returned to Indianapolis, working for J. Kraus and Company, dealing in carpets, later buying an interest in the firm, which soon became known as Kraus and Gall. Gall married Louisa [Louise] C. Ruschaupt on October 20, 1864 and they had three sons: Eddie, Albert and Freddie and one daughter, Berthe. He was elected Indiana state treasurer in 1890 and 1892. Gall was active in many organizations, especially as a freemason and a Knights Templar. Albert Gall died on October 13, 1905 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
