Biographical Note
John H. Long was born in January 1825 in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. In May 1849, he married Sarah McCleary of Stark County, Ohio and they became the parents of three children: Anna E., George L. and James F. The family was living in Kosciusko County, Indiana when John enlisted in August 1862 as a private in Company M, 5th Cavalry, 90th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War. His regiment took part in the Atlanta campaign and he served as a hospital steward at the general hospital set up at Kingston, Georgia. In June 1865, his company was tranfered to the 6th Cavalry, 71st Regiment and they served until mustering out in September of that year. Following the war, Long served as a representative in the 1867 Indiana General Assembly and was appointed city attorney of Leesburg following its incorporation in 1876. It's unknown whether he received medical training outside his work during the war, but he was referred to as "Dr. J.H. Long" before his death on June 21, 1877.
