Scope and Contents

This collection includes typewritten copies of "From Indiana to Arkansas by Flatboat, 1873 by Charles Perry Rollison and Party," a reminiscence by Thaddeus W. Rollison and dated March 19, 1937, and "Flatboat Trip from Indiana to Arkansas of William A. Rollison and Party Sunday, June 1, 1873," James Davis Rollison's recollections of his trip written down in the fall of 1906. Along with some family biographical information, the two reminiscences contain descriptions of the flatboats and how they were built; the delays, mishaps, and other experiences encountered while navigating the rivers; and family life after moving to Arkansas.

Biographical Note

Charles Perry Rollison was born August 12, 1827 in Morgan County, Ohio to Charles and Sarah Rollison. He married Matilda Runser Rusher (1823-1898) on February 17, 1858 and they had five children: Thaddeus, Charles Perry, Jr., Ella, Addison, and Marion. He and his family moved to Greene County, Indiana in the 1860s. On February 19, 1873, the family left Greene County and traveled by flatboat to De Witt, Arkansas and Charles lived there until his death at the age of 68 on December 22, 1895.

Thaddeus W. Rollison was born In Hardin County, Ohio on November 10, 1858. In 1873, he was 14 years old when his family moved to Arkansas. He married Rosa Etta Coffey (1863-1920) on October 26, 1879 and they had eleven children. He passed away at the age of 94 on August 29, 1953.

William J. Rollison was the younger brother of Charles Perry Rollison. He was born on August 11, 1832 in Morgan County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Thorn on September 7, 1853 and they had several children. They traveled by flatboat to De Witt, Arkansas in the summer of 1873. William passed away at the age of 52 on April 1, 1885.

James Davis Rollison, nephew of Charles and William, was born November 4, 1842 in Morgan County, Ohio. He married Euphemia Spencer (1841-1889) on August 4, 1870 and they had five children. He traveled with family to Arkansas in the summer of 1873, but later moved back to Indiana in 1882. James passes away at the age of 64 on November 20, 1906. His granddaughter was Cora Miller Gibson (1898-1984) and her family records included the stories of the 1873 Rollison family flatboat trips that are contained in this collection.
