This collection includes documents from the Marion County Circuit Court regarding a number of individuals accused of selling liquor without a license in October 1863 and from the Marion County Superior Court regarding a dispute in 1874 between plaintiffs Henry and John H. Monfort and defendent Charles Dollman for nonpayment of plastering services.

Historical Note
When Indiana first became a state, circuit courts heard all civil and criminal cases. The first circuit court for Marion County was established in 1821. As the need for more trial courts grew, the Indiana General Assembly created additional courts called superior courts. Marion County’s superior court was established in 1871. Indiana’s superior courts can hear all civil and criminal cases and are also charged with establishing small claims and minor offense divisions.
