Administrative History
The Fort Wayne and Southern Railroad was chartered in 1849 and its route was to run from Fort Wayne to Jeffersonville, Indiana. In 1854, a plan was unveiled which proposed to extend the railroad to Louisville, Kentucky via a tunnel under the Ohio River and fundraising was begun in earnest by the end of that year. The bold plan did not come to fruition and the railroad was forced into bankruptcy by the autumn of 1855. The only part of the proposed route completed by the original company was between Fort Wayne and Muncie, Indiana. The Fort Wayne and Southern was later absorbed into the Nickel Plate system and work on the southern section was eventually completed by the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad.
