Verne Patty correspondence
Collection — Folder: S1845
Identifier: S1845
Scope and Contents
This collection includes three handwritten letters sent to Verne Patty in October and December 1931 from Andrew Ness, a stamp dealer in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In the letters, Ness discusses the condition and value of stamps that Patty had sent to him. One of the letters was written on the back of a small broadside advertisement for Ness's business. The collection also includes an undated letter written by Mr. Patty and sent to author Emmet F. Harte requesting his opinion of a short story written by Patty's brother (the short story is not included) and where it might be sent for publication. Mr. Harte wrote a positive response on the back of the letter and recommended five possible publishers.

Biographical / Historical
Verne Patty was a lifelong resident of Carmel, Indiana. Born April 26, 1870, he was the eldest son of David and Margaret (Fisher) Patty. He became a newspaper printer and worked for the Noblesville Ledger and the Noblesville Morning Times. For a time, he also owned and published the Carmel Standard and for several years worked as a reporter for the Indianapolis News. In 1924, he became the curator of the Indiana State Museum that was located in the basement of the Statehouse. During his tenure, he was often called upon to appraise Indian relics and stamp collections. He was the curator for 34 years and served under the administration of nine governors until illness forced him to step down a few months before he passed away at the age of 88 on July 29, 1958.
