Herbert L. Heller (1908-1983) was a native of New Castle, Indiana. His family led in establishing New Castle as a rose growing center, and specialized in developing the American Beauty rose. Heller graduated from Indiana University in 1931. He earned advanced degrees at Ball State and Indiana, and began a career in education by teaching American and Indiana history at New Castle High School.
