Emma Shields Nunemacher Carleton collection

 Collection — Folder: S0218
Identifier: S0218

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 22 letters to Emma from Indianapolis poet and newspaperman Daniel L. Paine (1830-1895), regarding Indianapolis life, the works of other Indiana writers, including James Whitcomb Riley, and advice on Carleton’s writing (1889-1895). His wife was named Minnie, and he had a son named Dan.

Many of Emma’s poems are included. Some are hand-written, some typed, and some published. There are two letters from Emma, one in 1897 to Mrs. Duns, and one in 1916 to Mr. Brun. In 1915, she wrote a poem about sailors, which was requested by Professor W. E. Jenkins of Indiana University. There is one article entitled “Old-time Bandboxes” written by Emma, but the name of the publication is not given. Clippings of jokes are pasted on one sheet. There are three articles from “A Hoosier Listening Post” by Kate Milner Rabb, published in the Indianapolis Star, one of which tells about Emma’s death.

Biographical Note

Emma Shields Nunemacher, born in 1850, was the daughter of John R. and Avesta A. Nunemacher. They lived in New Albany, Indiana, in 1870 when the federal census taker listed the parents as ages 46 and 41. The children living with them at the time were: Mary C. (age 21); Emma (age 19); Walter C. (ager 16); Frank H. (age 11); Grace (age 7); and Elizabeth (age 2).

In 1875, Emma Nunemacher of New Albany married P. J. Carleton and moved to Indianapolis to live. She wrote poetry which was published in magazines and newspapers.

In 1900, Avesta was a 72-year-old widow living in New Albany with her daughters: Mary C. N. King (age 51); Emma S. Carleton (age 49); and Elizabeth V. Nunemacher (age 32). Twenty years later, the three sisters were still living together in New Albany. Mary was 71; Emma was 69; and Elizabeth was 51.

Emma Shields Nunemacher Carleton died at the age of 74. Her obituary, published in the New York Times on December 31, 1924, reported: “formerly a contributor of verse to newspapers and magazines, died at her home in Louisville, Ky., yesterday. She had been an invalid for ten years.”
