Biographical Note

Charles T. Baker was born in 1871 in the town of Norwalk, Ohio. When Baker was in his teens he was apprenticed by his parents to work for a printing business in North Carolina. Upon completing his apprenticeship he returned to Norwalk to work for the Fair Publishing House. In 1898 he moved to Rockport in Spencer County, Indiana, where he took a job with the Rockport Journal and then with the Rockport Democrat. Baker is best known as a historian of Spencer County and publisher of the Grandview Monitor, which he founded in 1905, after relocating to Grandview from Rockport. It was in the Monitor that Baker published his writings on the history of Abraham Lincoln’s life in Spencer County. Because of his research and scholarship, Baker became a well respected expert on Lincoln’s life in southern Indiana.
