Scope and Contents

This collection includes photographs from the Norris family in Whitely County, Indiana ranging from circa 1860 to circa 1950 and undated regarding several generations of the family as well as the Hower, Carns, and Smale families, and the Norris family homes and businesses. Box 2 contains a late 19th-century photograph album with tintypes and cartes de visite of members of the Carns, Smale, and Norris families

Biographical Note

Marcus Norris was born in Coschocton County, Ohio on August 8, 1820. When he was 21, he visited Indiana before returning to Ohio. Norris married his first wife, Elmira (Almira) Older (1824-1845) in Coschocton, Ohio on August 18, 1843. That same year, the couple moved to Whitley County, Indiana where Norris farmed. After Elmira's death, Norris remarried on December 31, 1846 to Martha Webb (1826-1848) and she died 2 years later, probably in childbirth.

Norris married his third wife, Margaret M. Hower (also Hawer) (1823-1902) on October 7, 1849. She had been married once before to Thomas S. Webb (1820-1849) in 1846, with whom she had a son, William "Willie" T. S. Webb (1847-1873). She was the daugher of George (1790-1863) and Mary E. (Muller) Hower (1793-1861) and had several siblings, including Christian (1820-), George John (1825-1893), John (1832-1900), and Henry (1833-1901).

The Norrises had several children, including George Washington (1850-1892), Samuel Henry (1851-1937), Mary Minerva (1855-1926), Martha Jane (1858-1944), Phoebe Ellen "Ella" (1861-1895), and Lewis Lincoln "Link" (1863-1940). Marcus Norris died June 20, 1883 and was buried in Richland Center Cemetery in Larwill, Whitley County, Indiana. Margaret M. Norris died March 3, 1902 and was buried with her late husband.

Samuel Henry Norris (1851-1937) marriedf Nancy Ferry (1853-1876) in Whitley County, Indiana on December 31, 1874 and they had a daughter, Nora G. (1875-1895). After Nancy's death, he married Mary E. Null (1858-1919) on August 22, 1878 in Miami County, Indiana and they had a son, William Frederick (1879-1960).

William Frederick "Fred" Norris (1879-1960) was born on July 18, 1879 in Indiana. In 1898, Fred Norris served in the Spanish-American War. He married Essie Merelda Carns (also Karns) (1881-1965), daughter of J. B. and Sarah Carns, on November 15, 1900 in Whitley County. The had one son, Glen Fremont (1901-1985). Following the war, Norris worked as a pharmacist at the Norris Drug Store in South Whitley, Whitley County, Indiana. Fred Norris died on February 25, 1960, and was buried at South Whitley Cemetery.

Mary Minerva Norris (1855-1926) married Elza M. Radcliff (1853-1927) on March 24, 1876 and they had a son, Floyd Everett (1876-1940). Elza Radcliffe had two siblings, Rachel A. and Zelda O. The couple were buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, Indiana.

Martha Jane Norris (1858-1944) married Frank Fremont Anderson (1855-1924) on February 21, 1877. They were buried in South Whitley Cemetery in Whitley County, Indiana.

Phoebe Ellen "Ella" Norris (1861-1895) married Frank Irven Ferrey (also Ferry) (1855-1924) on November 23, 1887 and they had a son, Ralph Roy.

Lewis Lincoln "Link" Norris (1863-1940,) married Viola "Ola" Null (1863-1958), sister of Samuel's wife Mary, and they had a son named Lee.

Originally from Maryland, William H. (1933-1900) and Ann Rebecca (Hahn) Null (1833-1921) moved to Miami County, Indiana where they farmed. The couple had 6 children, including: Mary E. (1858-1919), Samuel (1859-1936), Jennie (1861-1920), Martha (1863-1931), Viola (1863-1958), and Harry (1967-1944).

Mary E. Null (1858-1919) married Samuel H. Norris on December 31, 1874 in Whitley County, Indiana and had a son, William Frederick Norris.

Samuel Null (1859-1936) married Elmira Laudenschlager (1864-1949) on December 11 1884 in Miami County and they had 5 children: Esta (Estie) Rebecca (1885-1970), Maudie Rebecca (1887-1953), Harry (1899-1899), and twins William Henry (1900-1920) and Louis Samuel (1900-1920).

Jennie Null (1861-1920) married Joel Barnhart (1855-1919) on July 23, 1885 and they had a daughter and 2 sons: Minnie (1886-), Omer (Omar) J. (1886-) and William "Bill" Henry (1889-1967).

Martha Null (1863-1931) married Ausvin Laudenschlager (1962-1911) on February 21, 1884 in Miami County, Indiana and they had many children including, Mabel, Armeta, Cletus, Zora, Ervie, Tavelia, Lyell, and Harold.

Viola "Ola" Null (1863-1958) married Lewis Lincoln "Link" Norris (1863-1940) and they had one son, Lee.

Harry Null (1867-1944) married Flora Bell Way on February 11, 1892 in Miami County, Indiana and they had 2 children: Lulu D. and Omer (Omar) Leroy (1910-1976).

Jacob B. Carns (also Karns) (1851-1928) married Sarah Ann Smale (1858-1934) on September 11, 1878 in Indiana. They had 4 children: Ocia Veora (1880-1967), Essie Merelda (1881-1965), Arley G. (1884-1910), and Hazel Morcls (1889-1976).

Ocia "Asa" Veora Carns (1880-1967) married Floyd Ottowell Jellison and they had a daughter, Pauline.

Essie M. Carns married William Frederick "Fred" Norris (1879-1960) on November 15, 1900 in Whitley County and they had a son, Glen Fremont (1901-1985).

Hazel Morcis Carns (1889-1976) married George A. Domer on October 24, 1911 in Indiana and they had a son, Maxwell. The family moved to Los Angeles, California by 1940.
