The collection consists of photocopies of letters written by Sergeant George Stratton, 66th Indiana Regiment, Company B, to his family, 1862-1865. The second folder includes a newspaper clipping on the Stratton family and three pages of Stratton family genealogy notes. The third folder consists of a typed and bound photocopy of Stratton's personal diary from January 1, 1865-May 24 1865 transcribed by Robert B. Scott.

The penmanship in this hand-written letter, in ink, is easy to read. James Perry Campbell wrote to William Harrison Cowherd on October 13, 1863, from Collierville, Tennessee, telling him about the death of his son, Francis Marion Cowherd. The Battle of Collierville lasted for five hours. James wrote: "F.M. [Francis Marion] Cowherd was shot through his body; thought at first he was shot in the mouth but I was mistaken.
