Scope and Contents

This collection includes the July 16, 1999 agreement between Governor Frank O'Bannon and Governor Fumio Watanabe in English and Japanese as well as a handmade wooden box by artist, Osamu Watanabe, possibly created during 1998-1999. Osamu attended the Tochigi Prefectural School of Ceramics in Mashiko and later established a studio in New York City during 1978.

Historical Note

"Building on their Friendship and Co-operation Agreement established on June 18, 1998, the State of Indiana and Tochigi Prefecture, recognizing that their governments, organizations and citizens share the desire to enhance the friendship and co-operation that exists between them; and further that the mutual co-operation between the parties will contribute to their mutual development; do hereby agree to establish Sister State Relations." The agreement was re-established on July 16, 1999 in the City of Indianapolis between Governor Frank O'Bannon and Governor Fumio Watanabe.
