Scope and Contents
This collection comprises a memorial card for Dr. William Lomax who died on April 27, 1893 in Marion, Indiana. The small card is black in color with gold text and illustrations, depicting a short poem, a dove in flight carrying a note which reads "In Loving Remembrance of," and a closed Bible with the doctor's name and death date printed on the cover.

Biographical Note
William Lomax was born on March 15, 1813 to Abel and Elizabeth Lomax in Guilford County, North Carolina. He studied medicine under Dr. Joel Ruggs of Newport, Indiana in 1834 and attended medical lectures in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1836. Lomax eventually settled in Marion, Indiana in 1837. During the U.S. Civil War, he served as a physician and army surgeon with 12th Indiana Infantry Regiment. At the age of eighty, Dr. Lomax died on April 27, 1893 after succumbing to a three-week illness. Before his death, he had been one of the oldest living members of the Indiana State Medical Society.
