Historical Note
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a small, East Asian island nation in the Pacific Ocean. The modern nation was created when the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party) forces lost control of mainland China during the Chinese Civil War to the Chinese Communist Party, causing the nationalists to retreat to Taiwan in 1949. As a capitalist, anti-communist country, it has long been an ally of the United States, officially and later unofficially.
The U.S. Army Finance Center was relocated from St. Louis, Missouri to Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1953. The Army Finace School was also located there before it was moved to Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Major General Shao-Yu Wang of the Republic of China's army and 30 of his officers studied at the Army Finance School at Fort Benjamin Harrison in 1959. The 36-year old general was deputy chief in command of the Combined Service Forces of the Republic of China.
