Biographical / Historical
The American Association of University Women was founded in 1881 as a non-profit group dedicated to bettering the lives of girls and women across the country through the pillars of advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. It is a nonpartisan group that has more that has over 170,000 nationwide supporters and members. This has been a grassroots organization that has dedicated itself to the betterment of the lives of women and girls in the United States for over a century and exists in over 1,000 local branches across the country that have ties to over 800 colleges and universities.
The AAUW would come to Indiana within the decade for in 1889 Mrs. May Wright Sewall would form the Indiana Branch of the “Main Alumnae Association” along with 20 other charter members. This would officially be recognized as the Indiana Branch in 1890. The organization would grow and this main branch would become the Indianapolis Branch in 1913 as Bloomington, Indiana would soon have need of its own branch. This expansion would continue and still is today as there are now 14 branches across the state of Indiana.
