This collection includes photographs and photograph albums from Hazel Shields Rector and Leanor Rector Nigh in Indiana ranging from circa 1900 to 1962 regarding the Shields, Rector, and Nigh families, as well as Nigh's friends, activities, and education. There are also 2 report cards: a 6th grade report cart for Leanor Rector (1928-1929) and an 11th grade report card for Wade Nigh (1927); and an oversize folder containing 2 group photographs including Wade Nigh from 1925 and 1931 and a newspaper clipping from 1979 (B026).

Biographical Note

Tennyson "Tenn" Samuel Rector was born to Joseph Willard (1857-1926) and Sophia (Stockrahm) Rector (1860-1935) on June 17, 1888 in Indiana. His father was a farmer and his mother was born in the Netherlands. He had several siblings, including Etta May (1880-1965), William M. (1862-1967), Mary Edna (1864-1977), Margaret C., and Ruth Mattie (1900-1979). Rector married Hazel Louise Shields on May 10, 1913 in and they had 2 daughters, Mildren Leanor (1917-2008) and Sophie Ann (1923-1992). He owned a grocery store in Greene County in 1920. The family moved to Dugger, Sullivan County, Indiana, where Rector became owner of a feed and grocery store by 1930. Tenn Rector died on June 13, 1963 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Dugger, Indiana.

Hazel Louise Shields was born to Thomas Jefferson (1860-1943) and Anna Belle (Lisman) Shields (1865-1951) on May 3, 1895 in Greene County, Indiana. She had 3 brothers: Dova Floyd (1885-1919), Floyd R. (1888-1972), and David (1893-1973). Shields married Tennyson S. Rector in 1913 and had 2 daughters. She died on August 30, 1980 in Lafayette, Indiana and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Dugger.

(Mildred) Leanor Rector was born on October 2, 1917 to Tennyson Samuel (1888-1963) and Hazel Louise (Shields) Rector (1895-1980) in Greene County, Indiana. She had a sister, Sophie Ann (1923-1992), and the family lived in Dugger, Indiana. Rector graduated from Union High School in Dugger in 1935 and attended Indiana University for one year. Rector married Ary Wade Nigh on August 31, 1937 and they had 2 daughters, Sharon (1942-) and Deborah Lynn (1955-), and a son, Jerry W. (1945-2020). Nearly a decade after Wade's death, she married Joseph Abraham (1903-1989) in 1972. Leanor Nigh died on January 4, 2008 and was buried in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, Indiana.

(Ary) Wade Nigh was born on November 25, 1910 to Verly M. (1878-1954) and Georgia A. (Fortner) Nigh (1881-1953) in Shelby County, Indiana. He had 2 older brothers, Otis Russell (1901-1969) and Rufus M. (1905-1985). The Nighs lived on the family farm, founded 1869, in Shelbyville, Indiana. Nigh married (Mildred) Leanor Rector in 1937 and they had 2 children. The family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he worked as an electrician and superintendant for Western Electric Company. Nigh died on December 25, 1962 in a car accident when, driving on the highway in Worthington, Greene County, the car slid on ice and struck a tree. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, Indiana.

(Sophie) Ann Rector was born on May 26, 1923. She married Maurice Ray Magruder (1923-2008) on January 15, 1943 in Dugger, Indiana and they had 2 sons, Michael Alan (1953-2017) and David Lynn. In 1950, the couple lived in Lafayette, Indiana. She died in December 1992.

William M. Rector was born on August 10, 1882 to Joseph W. (1857-1926) and Sophia (Stockrahm) Rector (1860-1935) in Greene County, Indiana. He married Lessie Lynn (1886-1961) and they had a daughter, (Mary) Leola (1908-2005). He owned a grocery store, presumably with his brother Tennyson, in Greene County. Rector died on January 5, 1967 and was buried in Olive Branch Cemetery in Dugger, Indiana. -----

Dova (Dobie) Floyd Shields was born to Thomas Jefferson (1860-1943) and Anna Belle (Lisman) Shields (1865-1951) on October 7, 1885. He married Mary Bridges (1884-1925 on April 8, 1905 and they had several children: John Floyd (1906-1969), Ruth (ca. 1907-), Lotus Irene (1910-2003), Dova Floyd, Jr. (1912-1994), and Lexey Ray (1917-1982). He worked as a coal miner in Stockton, Indiana in 1910 and a farmer at the time of his death. Shields died on September 28, 1919 in Greene County and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Linton, Indiana.

Frank Roy Shields was born to Thomas Jefferson (1860-1943) and Anna Belle (Lisman) Shields (1865-1951) on May 28, 1888 in Linton, Indiana. He married Marie Ladson (1894-1992) on August 11, 1915 and they had a daughter, Anna F. (1919-2009). The family moved around, from Greene County, Indiana to Detroit, Michigan by 1930, then to Carlisle, Indiana by 1950. Over the years, Shields worked as a bookkeeper, coal miner, grocery store manager, sales clerk, and filling station attendant. Shields died on September 19, 1972 in Sullivan, Indiana and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Linton, Indiana.

David Shields was born to born to Thomas Jefferson (1860-1943) and Anna Belle (Lisman) Shields (1865-1951) on January 15, 1893 in Greene County, Indiana. He worked as a miner, but had a mining accident on November 6, 1913. He married Margaret Ellen Winters (1894-1954) in March, 1917 and they had a foster daughter named Josie Phillips. Shields served in the U.S. Army from his enlistment on September 20, 1917 until discharge on February 15, 1919, during World War I. He worked as a dairyman in 1930 and a farmer by 1940. Shields was remarried to Nellie Pearl Livingston (1896-1984). He was a member of the Cavary Baptist Church in Linton and Elks Lodge No. 866. Shields died on January 12, 1973 in Greene County and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Linton, Indiana.
