Historical Note

Human have used forms of engraving for the last 20,000 years using everything from wood, rock, stone, and metals as the hardened surface, and any possible surface, natural or manmade, as a canvas for the images. Engraving involves incising a design or image onto a hardened surface by cutting grooves, shapes, and patterns into it. The resulting surface is then either handpainted or inked to use as a printing plate. When the recessed areas are inked, it is called intaglio; when the non-recessed surface is inked, it is called relief printing. The items in this collection are all relief prints.
