Biographical Note
Peter Horner, Sr. was born September 30, 1864 to Joseph and Barbara (Miller) Horner, early settlers on Cedar Lake, in Lake County, Indiana. He had several siblings, including Jacob, John, Frank, Joseph, Jr., Mary, and Rose. Horner married Veronica Hilzley (1867-1958) on November 4, 1887 and had 9 children: Catherine Rose (1888-1975), Frances Anna (1890-1971), Elizabeth (1892-1985), Bertha (1894-1987), Magdalena “Lena” J. (1897-1970), Theresa Johanna (1899-1974), Peter John, Jr. (1901-1979), Martha Amelia (1904-2004), and Marie Martha (1907-2001). The Horners built a home in Armour Town in 1890. Horner was a woodworker employed at the Cedar Lake Handle Factory. Peter and Veronica Horner also raised their nephews Harvey and Alexander Bixenman, the sons of Veronica’s sister Bertha. Peter Horner, Sr. died on May 5, 1942 in Cedar Lake and was buried in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Indiana.
Veronica Hilzley was born in November 1867 to Ulrich (1822-1900) and Anna Mary (Kleiber) Hilzley (also Hiltsley) in Indiana. She had several siblings, Theresa (1866-1955), Leonard Frank (1871-1959), Anna E. (1874-1959), and Bertha.
Catherine Rose Horner (1888-1975) moved to Chicago, Illinois and married a shoe store salesman, Harvey William Poe (1883- ), on April 16, 1913 and they had a son named Franklin Marion (1914-). Her sisters Theresa and Martha lived with them at different points. The Poes divorced between 1930 and 1940. Catherine Poe moved back to Lake County, Indiana before her death.
Frances Anna Horner (1890-1971) married William Govert (1888-1970) on October 6, 1910 in Indiana. They had a son, Otto M. (1917), who died in infancy.
Elizabeth Horner (1892-1985) married Andrew Bixenman (1893-1941) on May 17, 1919 in Hanover, Indiana and they had 2 children, Florence (1920-1999) and Raymond (1921-1987).
Bertha Horner (1894-1987) married Frank G. Berger (ca. 1892-1959) on October 15, 1915 in Indiana and they had a daughter named Edna Theresa (1919- ).
Magdalena “Lena” J. Horner (1897-1970) married Edward Nicholas Fiegle (1886-1940) on November 19, 1918 and they had 2 children: Ruth (1919-2015) and Agnes Margaret (1921-1977). Edward Fiegle had 3 children from a previous marriage: Elmer Joseph (1913-1917), Dorothy (1915-1995), and Wilford (1917-1971).
Peter John Horner, Jr. (1901-1979) married Beatrice Alvina Ewer (1910-1998 on September 14, 1932 in Indiana. They adopted 3 daughters, Nina B., Diana, and Arlene, and fostered at least 9 other children.
Marie Martha Horner (1907-2001) married William Philip Stoll (1909-1971) on September 19, 1940 and they had 2 children, Nancy and Wayne.

Nicklaus Geisen was born on December 9, 1936 to Matthias (1805–1883) and Johanneta "Joanna" (Haben) Geisen (1805–1887) in Weierweiler, Saarland, Germany. He had at least 5 siblings including Matthias Y., Peter, Mary, Jacob, and Joseph M. The family immigrated to the United States before 1850 and moved to Lake County, Indiana. Nicklaus Geisen maried Elizabeth Long on February 10, 1862 and they had 10 children: Peter N., William F., Albert M., Frank J., Nicholas Aloysius, Elizabeth, John Joseph, Helena "Lena," Charles Henry, and Clara. Geisen owned the Cedar Lake Handle Factory in Armour Town, Indiana. Elizabeth Geisen worked as a midwife. Geisen died in 1900 and was buried in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

He married Caroline Spanier (1869–1952) on January 6, 1888 and they had at least 2 children, Caroline B. (1892-1996) and Martin J. (1897–1980). He built the Mellwood Hotel in Armourt Town, Lake County, Indiana in 1888. Geisen was also a local undertaker. He later sold the hotel to his relatives, the Lorscheiders. Geisen died in 1899 and was buried in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

John I. Lorscheider was born to Nicholas and Francis (Long) Lorscheider on February 9, 1873 in Illinois. The family bought the Mellwood Hotel from the Geisen family. John Lorscheider inherited the hotel from his parents and became the postmaster at the Armour post office on January 1, 1910, serving until 1920. The post office moved into a lean-to attached to the hotel where it operated from 1914 to 1924. Loscheider married Lena M. Ernst (1890-1982) on February 11, 1918 in Lake County. The couple left Armour Town in 1923. Two sources indicate they sold the hotel, one of which purports the new owner deliberately burned it down in 1924, while a newspaper, which also misspelledthe name of the hotel, states the hotel burned in October 1923 while Lorscheider was still the owner. The couple lived in Munster, Indiana in 1930 where John Lorscheider owned a barbeque stand. Lorscheider died on March 29, 1933 in Munster and was buried in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Lake. After his death, Lena Lorscheider married George Lange (1880-1957) in 1936. They built a home on the property where the Mellwood Hotel once stood.

Sever (also Syver or Siver) Bergslien was born circa 1860 in Sweden. He immigrated to the United States on August 6, 1887 and moved to Cook County, Illinois, where he was naturalized on April 16, 1894. Bergslien was a woodworker. He married Valborg Hellesen (ca. 1858-1890) on March 23, 1889. After the death of his first wife, Berglien married Jonette Paalsrucl (1865-1958) of Norway on July 29, 1903 in Chicago and they had 3 sons: Ralph A. (1904-1990), Leif Carter (1905-1961), and Erling Harold (1907-1975). The couple moved to Armour Town, Indiana and purchased the Cedar Lake Handle Factory circa 1902. Bergslien died on March 20, 1916 in Cook County, Illinois.

Adolph Friedrich Von Borstel was born on March 23, 1844 to Dietrich and Cathrina Margareta (Schutt) Von Borstel in Krummendeich, Hannover, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in the 1850s and lived in Brooklyn, New York. He married Maria Franziska Weke (1842-1890) on November 30, 1872 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and they had a child, Rose, who died in infancy or was stillborn. After her death, Von Borstel moved to Indiana and married Amalie Ohlhues (1862-1926) on May 11, 1894 in Indiana and they had a son, Adolph, Jr. (1898-). Von Borstel owned the Lakeview Hotel in Armour Town, Indiana, which was built in 1888. After the hotel burned down, he rebuilt it in another location on Cedar Lake and named it Edgewater Hotel. Von Borstel died on February 16, 1921 in Lake County and was buried in Meyer Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Indiana along with both his wives. Adolph Von Borstel, Jr. inherited the hotel, also known as Edgewater Resort, and operated it with his wife Augusta for decades.

Howard C. Meyer was born on August 22, 1871 to John H. (1837-1904) and Margaret Elizabeth (Dittmer) Meyer (1843-1922) in Crown Point, Indiana. He had 2 brothers, Legrand (1868-1923) and Horace G. (1873-1905). Meyer married Oda J. Hoffman (1881-1960) and they had 4 children: Florence J. (1904-1969), Ruth O. (1906-1980), Blanche E. (1907-1975), and Howard Allen “Bud” (1916-1983). Meyer died on August 19, 1941 in Cedar Lake. The Meyers were descended from one of the first white settlers to come to Cedar Lake, John H. Meyer (1805-1893), who sold much of the land in Armour Town. Many of the early Meyer family members are buried in Meyer Manor Mound Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

(1904-1990), Leif Carter (1905-1961), and Erling Harold (1907-1975). The couple moved to Armour Town, Indiana and purchased the Cedar Lake Handle Factory circa 1902. Bergslien died on March 20, 1916 in Cook County, Illinois.

Adolph Friedrich Von Borstel was born on March 23, 1844 to Dietrich and Cathrina Margareta (Schutt) Von Borstel in Krummendeich, Hannover, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in the 1850s and lived in Brooklyn, New York. He married Maria Franziska Weke (1842-1890) on November 30, 1872 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and they had a child, Rose, who died in infancy or was stillborn. After her death, Von Borstel moved to Indiana and married Amalie Ohlhues (1862-1926) on May 11, 1894 in Indiana and they had a son, Adolph, Jr. (1898-). Von Borstel owned the Lakeview Hotel in Armour Town, Indiana, which was built in 1888. After the hotel burned down, he rebuilt it in another location on Cedar Lake and named it Edgewater Hotel. Von Borstel died on February 16, 1921 in Lake County and was buried in Meyer Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Indiana along with both his wives. Adolph Von Borstel, Jr. inherited the hotel, also known as Edgewater Resort, and operated it with his wife Augusta for decades.

Howard C. Meyer was born on August 22, 1871 to John H. (1837-1904) and Margaret Elizabeth (Dittmer) Meyer (1843-1922) in Crown Point, Indiana. He had 2 brothers, Legrand (1868-1923) and Horace G. (1873-1905). Meyer married Oda J. Hoffman (1881-1960) and they had 4 children: Florence J. (1904-1969), Ruth O. (1906-1980), Blanche E. (1907-1975), and Howard Allen “Bud” (1916-1983). Meyer died on August 19, 1941 in Cedar Lake. The Meyers were descended from one of the first white settlers to come to Cedar Lake, John H. Meyer (1805-1893), who sold much of the land in Armour Town. Many of the early Meyer family members are buried in Meyer Manor Mound Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Historical Note
Cedar Lake is an incorporated town in Lake County, Indiana, which surrounds its namesake, a 782-acre lake. It was originally named West Point when it was founded in the mid-1800s. The name "Cedar Lake" belonged to a nearby town that is now called Creston. The Potawatomi occupied the area until they were forcibly removed from the state in 1838. The first white settlers arrived at the lake during the mid-1830s. Many German families moved there after immigrating to the United States in the mid-19th century. West Point was renamed Cedar Lake in 1870 after the establishment of the Cedar Lake Post Office. The local population grew after the Monon Railroad was built to the lake's western shore (Armour Town) in 1882, as did tourism. Cedar Lake was a popular resort destination, especially with visitors from Chicago, Illinois, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and had over 50 hotels and several dance pavilions and ballrooms. Cedar Lake grew to envelope the lake and the little communities around it.

Bea Horner Castrogiovani. The town was named for Chicago businessmen, Philip and Jonathan Armour of the Armour and Swift meatpacking houses. Its largest industry was ice, farmed from the lake and shipped out of "the Region" by local companies--which included Armour Brothers Ice, John Shedd's Consumers Ice, and Knickerbocker--in special Monon Railroad cars. There was also the Cedar Lake Handle Factory, which operated from 1870 to 1926.
The Cedar Lake Historical Association is a local organization that focuses on Cedar Lake history and offers programs, hosts special events, and operates the Museum at Lassen’s Resort on the shores of Cedar Lake, Indiana.
