This collection includes reel-to-reel audio tapes from a television panel discussion show entitled, Report from the State House, produced at WTTV, Channel 4 and hosted by Mike Ungersma. The panelists include Edgar D. Whitcomb, Nelson Rockefeller, and other politicians and educators in Indianapolis, Indiana, ranging from 1971 to 1972, regarding Indiana politics and education.

Biographical Note

Edgar Doud Whitcomb was born November 6, 1917 in Hayden, Indiana, the son of John W. and Louise Doud Whitcomb. He had three siblings: Laura, Sarah, and Charles. Whitcomb attended Indiana University in 1939, which he left in 1940 to join the Army Air Corps. Whitcomb served in the Philippines as a second lieutenant and was captured by the Japanese. He was able to escape, which he detailed in his book, Escape from Corregidor (1958).

Whitcomb entered Indiana University law school after World War II and earned his degree in 1954. He served in the Indiana Senate from 1951 to 1954 and also entered private practice. Whitcomb served as assistant United States attorney from 1954 to 1956. In 1966, he was elected Indiana secretary of state, elected governor of Indiana in 1968 and was able to get a number of reforms passed during his term, which ended in 1973. Whitcomb ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in 1976, then retired to private life, which included sailing solo across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

He was married to Patricia Louise Dolfuss, with whom he had five children. The couple divorced in 1987. He then married Mary Evelyn Smith Gayer in 2013. Whitcomb died on February 4, 2016 in Rome, Indiana and was buried in Hayden Cemetery.
