Administrative History
The American Legion was charterd by the U.S. Congress as a patriotic veterans organization in 1919 following the end of World War I. Its national headquarters are located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, across from the Legion's Indiana Department. Today, membership stands at nearly 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.
The American Legion is led by its national commander, 5 national vice commanders, and 6 national constitutional officers. The National Executive Committee (NEC), which is comprised of elected representatives from each department, as well as the national commander and 5 national vice commanders. Each department elects a national committeeman and an alternate. The NEC drafts the organization's annual budget, approves contracts and spending, and oversees the Legion's administration.
