Historical Note

The Indianapolis Union Railway Company resulted from the Indianapolis City Council's authorization in 1850 of the laying of tracks for the first union railroad in the country. The expressed purpose of the council's authorization was to build a joint railroad connecting the four railroads then serving Indianapolis. Construction of a common depot started in 1852. The Union Passenger Station opened September 28, 1852. Union Station replaced this first building in 1888. Eventually, the Indianapolis Union Railway operated Union Station, the Union tracks, and the Indianapolis Belt Railroad.
