This collection includes an account book used by a general store located in Southport, Indiana. Ranging from September 6, 1853 to August 31, 1854, the entries record daily purchases of groceries, dry goods, clothing, hardware, and sundries. Though the store is not identified, the account book was most likely from George Tomlinson's establishment.

Historical Note

Southport, Indiana, located in Perry Township, Marion County, Indiana, was established in 1832 and incorporated in 1853. George Tomlinson moved to Perry Township with his guardian, Rev. Henry Brenton, in 1823. Around 1847, he began a general merchandising business at Southport and continued in the business for twenty years before retiring.
