Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a "Blank Book" manufactured by the William B. Burford Company of Indianapolis, Indiana and used by C. Earl Suffrins starting on February 7, 1905 to record the books that he had read by a number of authors. Much of the volume is empty, but in the back there are several handwritten pages of notes written by his father, Charles A. Suffrin, about his "Life Story." Also tucked in the back cover are a few more handwritten notes, one with gardening directions and two with notes regarding Abraham Lincoln's funeral train in Indianapolis.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Earl Suffrins was born May 7, 1890 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Charles A. and Eloise (Blease) Suffrins. He served in the Indiana National Guard for three years prior to World War I and served as a private with 334 Infantry, 84th Division during the war. Suffrins married Hazel (Insley) Whitehurst in October 1917. He worked as a printer and a commercial saleman in the paint industry. Suffrins and his wife moved to Arizona around 1945 and he died there at the age of 59 on May 14, 1949.
