This collection includes a debtor's ledger of Fletcher, Butler, and Yandes containing entries from 1842 to 1854, with the bulk of the entries ranging from 1842 to 1846. Following the dissolution of the firm's partnership in 1843, Butler continued work on the accounts and the ledger has the notation "B & N" above several entries, presumably the abbreviation for the firm of Butler and Newcomb. Historical note
Fletcher, Butler, and Yandes was the Indianapolis, Indiana law firm of Calvin Fletcher, Sr. (1798-1866), Ovid Butler (1801-1881), and Simon Yandes (1816-1903). Fletcher moved to Indianapolis in 1821 and practiced law on his own for a number of years before going in to partnership with Butler in 1836. From 1837 to 1838 Yandes studied under Fletcher & Butler before taking a course in law at Harvard University. Yandes returned to Indianapolis in 1839 and became a partner in the law practice. The firm handled civil and criminal cases and also had a successful collection business. Fletcher dissolved the partnership in 1843 to focus on his farming and banking interests. Butler continued in the law profession for several more years and became partners with Horatio C. Newcomb (1821-1882) in 1846 before retiring from the practice of law in 1849.
