This collection includes an Elmhurst Hymnal (circa 1921) that Emma Carleton used as a scrapbook. The scrapbook contains a number of letters sent to her by Daniel L. Paine, an Indianapolis poet and newspaperman, from 1888 to 1895 and two undated photographs, one of 4 unidentified women and another with the description "Majorie L, age 7, taken on the school house steps." The scrapbook also includes newspaper clippings regarding Paine's death in May 1895, undated writings by Mrs. Carleton, a few clipping from the Chicago Tribune (1911), and a January 30, 1917 letter from Caroline King Phillips.

Biographical / Historical
Emma Shields Nunemacher was born on August 4, 1850 in New Albany, Indiana to John R. and Avesta A. Nunemacher. She was the granddaughter of Patrick Shields, a member of the first Indiana Constitutional Convention. She married Philip J. Carleton in 1974 and they had one son who died in childhood. She became a writer of note and contributed to a number of publications, including the Detroit Free Press, Puck, Judge, and Life. She was also a poet and wrote the "Ginger Jar" column for the Chicago Record. During her marriage she lived in Indianapolis, but following her husband's death in 1887, she moved back to New Albany and lived there until she passed away at the age of 74 on December 30, 1924.
