This collection includes John A. Birkle's account book containing entries ranging from 1913 to 1961, with the bulk ranging from 1913 to 1933 regarding his blacksmith and farming accounts. The account book was later used to record a number of recipes for cakes, cookies and wines and directions for canning green beans, making soap, and curing meat.

Biographical note

John Andrew Birkle was born on April 12, 1881 in Jefferson County, Indiana to Max and Mary Birkle. He married Ellen DeGrand around 1908. He was a farmer and blacksmith and later worked for the Jefferson County Highway Department. He passed away at the age of 81 on September 5, 1962.
