Historical Note
"In 2020 the Allen County Public Library is celebrating 125 years of enriching our community through lifelong learning and discovery. Over the decades the library has grown to consist of the main library in downtown Fort Wayne and thirteen branches in the city and outlying communities.
"The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library is the second largest family research center in the United States. Visitors from across the country and around the world rely on the Genealogy Center for its international collection of physical resources; free access to numerous databases; and knowledgeable staff.
"ACPL has also joined with the Friends of the Lincoln Collection to build the Rolland Center for Lincoln Research. The center, scheduled to open Spring 2021, will showcase the immense collection of lectures, photos, and other original documents related to our nation’s 16th president that the library houses and curates.
"In 2020 the library was visited 1.2 million times, limited by the pandemic. The library’s holdings consisted of almost 2.9 million items, with a circulation total of nearly 2.6 million physical items. That is in addition to a usage rate of almost 5.9 million for the library’s electronic materials.

"From its beginnings in 1908, the Gary Public Library emerged as a combined social and educational agency - pressed upon to keep up with an expanding city and organize itself as an institution to fulfill these needs. Gary, Indiana, founded in 1906, was an industrial-based land of opportunity that attracted thousands of European immigrants as well as people from throughout the country.
"Throughout the years, the library has remained a vital institution within the community through its services, materials, and programs. The library’s Indiana Room, local Gary history and genealogy, serves as the region’s oldest collection of local history having started soon after the library was established. The library also continues to serve and provide materials as a designated Federal Depository Library (selective) since 1943.
"Currently, the Gary library system continues to provide service throughout the city of Gary through its Gary Public Library and Cultural Center and two branches - Kennedy Branch and Woodson Branch. It is one of seven independent library systems in Lake County, Indiana."
