Biographical Note

John. M (Baptist) Villars was born in 1818 from Chavanay, Dept. of Loire, France. He came from France to Iowa, where he was ordained in 1848 by Bishop Loras. Soon after, he was positioned at the St. John's Evangelist Church in Iowa. In 1862, he was an assistant before becoming their pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richmond, Indiana. He passed away in 1868 and his death was initially ruled a suicide, but has since been shrouded in mystery and is the source of Grace Conway's research in the collection.
