Scope and Contents
The bulk of the collection consists of Maude Vestal’s diaries (1920, 1925-1932) and papers, ranging from 1920 to 1940, largely regarding the Wendell Willkie Notification Committee (1940). The Willkie papers principally pertain to the planning of the official notification ceremony in Elwood, Indiana, on August 17, 1940. The collection also contains family and business correspondence; papers regarding her guardianship of Ann Catherine Shaffer; reports on clothing production by Red Cross Volunteers in Anderson; and social work reports.

Biographical Note
Hulda Maude Malone was born in February 1879, in Anderson, Indiana. Her parents were Charles T. and Hannah Ann (Bronnenberg) Malone. She married Albert H. Vestal on January 8, 1903. Like her husband, Maude Vestal was active in the work of the Republican Party. She was a member of the Indiana Woman’s Republican Club, as well as the Madison County and Anderson Republican organizations. Vestal was active in the campaign of Wendell Willkie for U.S. president in 1940. She was also very involved in the American Red Cross in Madison County. Maude Vestal died on June 13, 1951, in Anderson, Indiana.
